Overview
US History I takes the class on a humanities-based journey through American history from the peopling of the continent to 1865. The sequence of study winds through pre-Columbian Native American societies, European colonization, African culture and society, the American Revolution, origins of American government, manifest destiny, and the American Civil War. We will also explore the historical perspectives of contemporaries on topics including the Cahokia moundbuilders, Native American society today, the trial of Anne Hutchinson, New England town hall meetings, the California gold rush, Frederick Douglass’s autobiography, and more. We will devote special attention to people whose voices have been muted over time, and to why this silencing has happened to some and not others. Their words, ideas, and actions will illuminate and complicate our understandings of the past, ourselves, this nation, and, ultimately, our connection to humanity. We can honor and learn from them by discovering, remembering, and retelling their stories.
